Both the Scanpan and Swiss Diamond brands focus on non-stick, durable cookware. Each offers various stainless steel and aluminum-alloy collections, and both companies take pride in eco-friendly manufacturing techniques during production.

There is one big difference: their proprietary non-stick coatings. These vary considerably and should be carefully considered when you research your options.

Scanpan Materials And Construction

Scanpan’s proprietary non-stick coating is known as STRATANIUM and, in some higher-end collections, STRATANIUM+.

This technology is crafted using five layers of hard composites and a wavelike structure for durability and a superior frying experience that doesn’t require a lot of fat or oil.

The STRATANIUM + option features a rougher surface, ideal for browning and searing meats.

STRATANIUM is “50% more durable” than previous technologies, and Scanpan boasts that it releases food 30% better than standard non-stick.

By layering five different materials within one non-stick coating, you get a thick cooking surface that evenly distributes heat, stands up to metal utensils, and is corrosion-resistant.

Swiss Diamond Materials and Construction

True to its name, the Swiss Diamond non-stick coating utilizes diamond crystal fragments to create a strong, durable non-stick coating that won’t quickly degrade.

This technology allows Swiss Diamond products to last longer than other non-stick options and provides consumers with a durable collection that can stand up to frequent, rough use for many years.

In fact, the company conducted a lab test in which they rubbed the non-stick coating with 2,000 continuous strokes of coarse sandpaper. The Swiss Diamond XD non-stick coating lasted 12x longer than 3-layer non-stick coating, 24x longer than ceramic non-stick, and 48x longer than 2-layer non-stick.

During construction, Swiss Diamond pressurize and sandblast the cookware’s interior. Then, the non-stick diamond coating is plasma-deposited onto the surface to form a non-porous layer that protects food from contact with the inner aluminum alloy materials.

Within its collections, the XD lines use “20% more real diamond crystals” than the HD lines. The added diamonds increase durability and enhance food release.

Scanpan takes pride in crafting artisan-made products that pass through the hands of at least eight craftspeople before being shipped off for distribution.

The stainless steel collections utilize their namesake material in the cooking surfaces, handles, and knobs.

Cooking Performance

Since both Swiss Diamond and Scanpan focus on non-stick aluminum and stainless steel cookware, the performance tends to be quite similar. It’s nevertheless useful to review both companies and note some small differences in the cooking experiences they offer.

Among the popular Scanpan Classics collections, the STRATANIUM non-stick coating can stand up to metal-safe utensils. Scanpan cookware is also oven safe up to 500°F and allows for stovetop searing, braising, and deglazing.

Unlike most non-stick cookware, Scanpan’s STRATANIUM+ coating, which you’ll find on the TECHNIQ, HAPTIQ, CS+, and PRO S+ collections, has a slightly rough, textured surface.

This texture grips meat, maximizing contact and allowing you to achieve a golden-brown crust. It mimics the cooking experience you would get with stainless steel or cast iron cooking surfaces.

Most traditional non-stick cookware, including Swiss Diamond, has a slick cooking surface designed for manipulating foods and easy cleaning but are not ideal for searing.

The Classics collection features a squeeze-cast base to promote even cooking and heat distribution. Scanpan also offers an induction line for those who prefer this kind of cooking surface.

Swiss Diamond Performance

As previously mentioned, Swiss Diamond’s use of diamond crystal fragments in its non-stick coating creates a  durable surface.

But since it lacks the texture of the Scanpan STRATANIUM+ coating, it’s not the ideal surface for searing and browning.

All collections are oven-safe up to 500°F, except for the Swiss Titan collection, which is oven-safe up to 410°F.

The XD+ Nonstick Induction, HD Classic Nonstick Induction, Nonstick Clad, Premium Clad, and Premium Steel collections are induction-compatible, but the XD+ Nonstick, HD Classic Nonstick, and Swiss Titan are not.

Unlike Scanpan, Swiss Diamond non-stick cookware is not metal-utensil safe.

Cleaning and Care

Proper maintenance and cleaning are integral to any cookware’s longevity, and neither Scanpan nor Swiss Diamond products are exceptions to this rule.

Both brands have made a point to focus on ease-of-use features with cleaning and care in mind.

Both Swiss Diamond and Scanpan products are dishwasher-safe, but each company recommends hand-washing. Always wash your cookware with warm, soapy water after each use and avoid t abrasive cleaners.

Both brands offer pans with welded handles and rivetless cooking surfaces. This makes cleanup especially easy since grease, stains, and bits of food often get stuck around rivets.

To avoid damage and permanent wear, don’t leave food stuck to your cookware after use. Never use aerosol cooking sprays on non-stick cookware.

Additionally, when storing either Swiss Diamond or Scanpan cookware, make sure you use a divider between items to avoid scratching or dents.

If you decide to purchase Swiss Diamond cookware, keep in mind that it is not metal-utensil safe. Choose wooden or silicone utensils with this brand’s products.

What Others Are Saying

To get a better sense of how Scanpan and Swiss Diamond compare, let’s take a look at how other experts and customers perceive these brands.

Consumer Reports named Swiss Diamond one of its top non-stick cookware sets. They praised its non-stick material’s durability, claiming that it withstood 2,000 strokes of steel wool. They also highlighted its handles, saying they’re “among the sturdiest of all non-stick sets.”

Good Housekeeping awarded the Scanpan CTQ 14-piece set the Best Ceramic Non-Stick Cookware. They love that these pans are excellent for searing despite the non-stick surface. 

Reviewed.com (part of USA Today) praised the Scanpan Classic fry pan for its ability to handle metal utensils, saying it was one of the “only pans to pass our scratch tests with flying colors.”

Wirecutter (part of The NY Times) tested several non-stick pans and was not impressed with Scanpan or Swiss Diamond. They suggest that the Scanpan Classic Fry Pan sides are too steep to flip hash browns and eggs but praised its even heat distribution. They also note that the Swiss Diamond pan was almost identical to Scanpan with the same egg-flipping issues. 

Customer reviews on Amazon for Scanpan and Swiss Diamond are overwhelmingly positive. The main critique of both brands is that the non-stick surface wears down and loses its non-stick ability.

Unfortunately, this is the most common complaint across all brands. But the good news is that there are ways to make a non-stick pan non-stick again.

Bottom Line: Should You Buy Scanpan or Swiss Diamond?

Ultimately both Scanpan and Swiss Diamond offer similar value and a unique focus on sustainability and environmentally conscious manufacturing processes.

At a glance, it can be difficult to tell the two apart. However, when you look closer at the details, you’ll find these brands have some distinct differences.

Before I give you my recommendation, let’s recap the main differences:

  • Scanpan cookware is made in Denmark, and Swiss Diamond is made in Switzerland.
  • Scanpan offers a broader selection of cookware with 10 non-stick collections and 1 stainless steel. Swiss Diamond offers 6 non-stick and 2 stainless steel.
  • Both cookware heats quickly and evenly, but Scanpan’s STRATANIUM+ non-stick coating also has a textured surface, ideal for searing and browning.
  • Swiss Diamond’s non-stick coating is proven to last up to 48x longer than the competition. However, it was not tested directly against Scanpan’s coating, so we don’t know for sure which one is more durable.
  • Scanpan’s non-stick coating is metal utensil-safe while Swiss Diamond’s is not.

If you’re still stuck on the fence, I recommend Scanpan. It offers a broader selection of cookware, the cooking surface is metal utensil safe, and the textured non-stick surface provides more versatility.

Plus, its 5-layer STRATANIUM coating, which took years to perfect, provides outstanding food release and durability.

Swiss Diamond cookware is also an excellent choice. It’s dedicated to craftsmanship and quality with a proven track record. The unique, diamond-reinforced non-stick coating will outperform most non-stick brands, so if you’re tired of replacing your non-stick pans every couple of years, Swiss Diamond is a durable option.
