Purple Pillow vs. My Pillow: In-Depth Comparison After Sleeping 60 Nights on Both

Are you in the market for a new pillow and considering the Purple Pillow or MyPillow? In this article, I provide an in-depth comparison of the Purple Pillow vs. MyPillow and provide unbiased analysis after sleeping on both for 60 nights. You’ll learn how these popular pillows compare in terms of materials, comfort, warranty, sizes, and more.

A few months ago, after several restless nights in a row, I decided it was time to research and test out new pillows to improve my quality of sleep. In my research, I came across a couple of unique and innovative pillows that have recently become wildly popular: the Purple Pillow and MyPillow.

You probably recognize MyPillow from the TV commercials where the inventor, Mike Lindell, raves about the patented “interlocking” foam technology. If this doesn’t ring a bell, this video should help.

Until I started my own research, I hadn’t heard about the Purple Pillow. It turns out that the Purple Pillow is a product extension from the makers of the Purple Mattress, known for its unique material that keeps you cool while you sleep, unlike memory foam, which is dense and can get hot.

The core difference between the Purple Pillow and MyPillow is the materials they are made out of and how those materials impact comfort. Purple Pillow is made out of patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer, which is a soft rubber-like material that flexes to the shape of your head while remaining firm. Hyper-Elastic Polymer is heavy, which makes the Purple Pillow ideal for stationary sleepers but problematic for people that change positions throughout the night.

MyPillow is made out of shredded interlocking pieces of Open Cell Poly foam, which is a light and breathable material that is exceptionally soft and keeps your head cool throughout the night. Since the foam is shredded, you can add, remove, or adjust it to your desired support and comfort levels.

Without further ado, let’s dive right into the comparison. Select a link below to go straight to a section:

The Purple Pillow and MyPillow have hundreds of reviews online (Reviews on Amazon: Purple Pillow, MyPillow). Some people claim they are the best pillows they have ever slept on in their life and they would never sleep on another pillow ever again, while others claim a $10 pillow from Walmart would result in a better night’s sleep. In short, these products are polarizing.

Since both the Purple Pillow and MyPillow will give you your money back within a certain time frame (Purple Pillow: 100 nights, MyPillow: 60 nights), I decided to put them to the test and find out for myself which one of these pillows resulted in the best night’s sleep. I tried both for 60 days, and here is my first-hand experience and evaluation.

What Materials Are They Made From?

Purple Pillow:

purple pillow material

The Purple Pillow is made with its patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer, which is a synthetic material designed to comfort your head while always keeping its shape. If you open up the cover, you can see the smart-grid of triangles that will flex around your head and neck to give you the perfect support.

It comes with a cover made out of 55% Polyester, 37% Viscose from Bamboo, 8% Spandex, and is designed to keep your head/face/neck cool and comfortable.

MyPillow:

MyPillow is made with its patented Open Cell Poly interlocking foam. Open Cell Poly is a type of foam that is more breathable, less dense, and allows air to flow through it easily. Similar to the Purple Pillow’s Hyper-elastic Polymer, this material is designed to keep your head cool throughout the night. It comes with a cover made out of 100% cotton.

How Long Are Their Trial Periods?

Purple Pillow:

You can try the Purple Pillow out for 100 days, and if you are not satisfied, they will pay for your return shipping and give you a 100% refund.

MyPillow:

You can try MyPillow for 60 days (40 fewer days than Purple Pillow) and return it for a full refund if it’s not the most comfortable pillow you’ve ever owned. If you decided to return it, unlike Purple Pillow, you have to pay for shipping.

Do They Have Warranties?

Purple Pillow:

The Purple Pillow comes with a 100-day limited warranty. For more details on that, click here.

MyPillow:

MyPillow comes with a 10 Year Warranty on any workmanship or material defects. More info here.

Where Are They Made?

MyPillow:

MyPillow is made and assembled in Minnesota, USA.

Purple Pillow:

The Purple Pillow is assembled in the US, but it is unclear where the materials are manufactured.

Which Pillow Is More Comfortable?

To me, comfort is by far the most important factor in determining the best pillow. The one problem with that is, comfort is very subjective. What feels too firm to one person feels too soft for another person. Your preference may be completely different than mine, so please take my evaluation with a grain of salt. I would encourage you to try both for yourself and return the losing pillow. With that said, here are MY thoughts.

Purple Pillow:

Purple Pillow claims to be better than other pillows in two ways:

  • It keeps you cool throughout the night by allowing air to flow through its patented poly chambers (those triangles I mentioned before)
  • It supports and comforts your head and neck better by relaxing and flexing under pressure while never losing support or needing to be fluffed—this is due to its special patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer material

This video gives you a good look at how it works.

The Purple Pillow is designed to work well whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach. I usually fall asleep on my back and make my way to my sides throughout the night, so it is nice to have a pillow that works well for both.

As promised, their material did a great job keeping my head cool throughout the night. The material is much more breathable than most pillows, and I never woke up hot or uncomfortable.

I enjoyed the general feel of the Purple Pillow and could quickly tell the material was much different than a standard pillow filled with feather, polyester, or foam. The pillow bounced back when I moved, the filling never molded to each side like a standard pillow. This resilience was obviously by design and is what makes their pillow different.

In the past, the Purple Pillow came with an inflatable adjustable booster which allowed you to inflate or deflate the pillow depending on your desired firmness. They got thousands of complaints about the inflatable booster and have recently discontinued it. Based on the dozens of reviews I read, it was faulty and often would deflate in the middle of the night…not good.

The model that they sell now, which I bought, comes in one style and does not give you any options for adjusting firmness.

Overall, the Purple Pillow was comfortable, but I found it to be very too floppy and way too heavy. I prefer a much softer, lighter pillow that gets somewhat worn in overtime.

MyPillow:

MyPillow makes a pretty bold claim to be the “The World’s Most Comfortable Pillow™.”

They differentiate themselves by filling the pillow with Open Cell Poly foam that is shredded into small pieces. Through years of testing, they discovered that the ideal filling is made up of three different size chunks of this material. They claim that their foam is “interlocking,” but it is merely a bunch of shredded foam, nothing unique or interlocking for that matter. You can see what I’m talking about in this video.

All that matters is how the pillow feels, and I loved it. It was very soft, light, breathable, supportive, and adaptable to different sleeping positions. I liked the feel of the small pieces of foam and the fact that you can adjust the position of the foam within the pillow to cradle, support, and comfort in the areas you need it. It is way more flexible and adjustable than the Purple Pillow.

As far as comfort, MyPillow was up there with the most comfortable pillow I’ve ever slept on. I vaguely recall a few fancy hotel pillows that could challenge it, but standard department store pillows are not even close.

When purchasing MyPillow, you can choose either the Classic MyPillow or the Premium MyPillow (links to check out on Amazon).

With the Classic, you have two choices for the level of firmness, medium, or firm.

With Premium, you can choose between a standard or king-size pillow and four different levels of firmness:

  • Yellow, least firm
  • White, slightly more firm
  • Green, ever more firm
  • Blue, the most fill and it, therefore, the firmest option

They show this guide on their website to help you figure out which one to purchase.  Based on my Tshirt size, I went with Green.

Size and Weight

The one notable thing to point out here is the weight of the Purple PIllow. Over ten pounds! Way heavier than any pillow I’ve ever used. Some may see this as a positive, but, to me, this was a major negative. I much prefer a lighter pillow that I can move around with ease.

Purple Pillow:

Size: 24″ x 16″ x 3″

Ship Size: 8″ x 17″

Weight: 10.2 lbs (very heavy for a Pillow!)

MyPillow:

Size: 18.5 x 27.9 x 5.1

Weight: 1.2 lbs (way lighter than the Purple Pillow)

Caring and Cleaning

Purple Pillow:

You can throw the covering in the wash, but to clean the Hyper-Elastic Polymer material, you’ll have to do it by hand with water and vinegar. As you’ll see in the next section, this is something you’ll want to do right away due to a funky synthetic odor it gives off.

MyPillow:

Wash it every four months, even if it’s clean. You can throw the whole pillow in your washer and run it cold or warm on a regular cycle, be sure not to use fabric softener. You can also throw it in the dryer and tumble on high heat, don’t use dryer balls or fabric softener.

MyPillow recommends using only cotton pillowcases since other materials may diminish the cooling effect.

When you first get the pillow, it helps to throw it in the dryer for 15 minutes to fluff it since the foam can get compressed during shipping.

Downsides of the Purple Pillow and MyPillow

Purple Pillow:

My biggest complaint with the Purple Pillow is that it was too heavy (10 pounds!). I understand that the weight and resilience of the pillow are by design, but I prefer one that is much softer, lighter, and can be moved around without flopping. It could work well for stationary sleepers, but not if you change positions as I do.

The other turn off was the smell. It had a distinct synthetic, chemical, rubbery odor as if it just came off the factory line. As you can imagine, this is not too appealing for a product that is 5 inches from your nose for 8 hours a night. The smell subsided after a quick hand wash, but it was a bad first impression.

Before Purple discontinued the inflatable booster feature in October 2017, as I mentioned before, people were very vocal about how terrible it was and never stayed inflated. Thankfully I bought the newer version and didn’t have to deal with that.

MyPillow:

I’ve been sleeping on MyPillow for several months now and don’t have any significant complaints. In my research, I discovered that many people feel that it is too flat and doesn’t have enough body. Others found it to feel lumpy due to the shredded foam material inside of it. Others did not like the fact that they had to fluff it very often, which I haven’t found to be an issue yet.

The only other complaint worth mentioning for both of these is the cost. You can see the latest pricing on Amazon here for Purple Pillow, here for MyPillow.

You can buy a standard pillow in a store for significantly less. However, in my opinion, a good night’s sleep is so valuable that I am willing to pay a premium for a product that can help accomplish that. Everyone’s situation is different, but that is my opinion.

The Verdict: Purple Pillow or MyPillow?

As I mentioned before, comfort is by far the number one factor in determining a pillow for me. These companies can make all the claims they want, but after touching, feeling, and sleeping on both of these pillows, the clear winner was MyPillow.

Everyone is different, and what feels comfortable to me could feel uncomfortable to you. I enjoyed the Purple Pillow, but it was simply too heavy and inflexible for me. If you are a stationary sleeper, you should seriously consider trying it out.
