Best Overall: SoundAsleep Dream Series Queen Size Air Mattress

According to our research and testing, the Sound Asleep Dream Series is the best overall queen size mattress. It is the perfect air mattress to use in your home for guests and comes with a convenient bag to carry along with you on a trip. It earned best overall because of the built-in 1-click pump that makes it easy to inflate and deflate, its above average comfort, its height (19 inches), which makes it feel like you are sleeping in a real bed. Plus, it comes with extras such as a one-year warranty, “Sure-Grip” bottom, and easy cord storage, to name a few. But don’t just take my word for it, the Wirecutter.com also rated this the best air mattress in 2018, and it has thousands of mostly excellent reviews on Amazon.

Ease of Use: Inflating and Deflating

Inflating and deflating this air mattress could not be any easier. It comes with a patented 1-click built-in pump that works by simply turning the dial to either inflate or deflate.

SoundAsleep one click built in pump

You don’t have to worry about connecting a separate pump or messing with any complicated directions. It inflates and deflates in four minutes, which is just enough time to brush your teeth and wash your face. To adjust firmness, you click the dial to add or remove air. SoundAsleep makes setup easy, so you don’t have to stress right before bedtime. Here’s a quick look at how it works:

YouTube video

Comfort

Air mattresses are notorious for being, well, not so comfortable. Fortunately, this reputation does not hold true with the SoundAsleep Dream Series. This air mattress, when fitted with a sheet, feels more like a regular mattress in terms of comfort.

It features ComfortCoil technology with 40 internal air coils, which help maintain its form, adds durability, and firmness. It also features a SureGrip bottom, which prevents sliding on slippery surfaces like hardwood or tile.

Size

One of the best characteristics of this air mattress is its above-average height. Once inflated, it stands 19 inches tall, which is about the same height as a regular mattress on top of a box spring on the floor.

Most air mattresses are around 10 inches tall. Short air mattresses require more effort to get in and out of and can be difficult for some people. The SoundAsleep Dream Series is tall enough that you can get in and out of it with ease.

This queen size air mattress is 78 inches long and 58 wide, which is just shy of the standard queen-size (80 x 60) but still provides plenty of room for one person to stretch out or a couple to sleep comfortably. It weighs just shy of 20 pounds when deflated and has a weight capacity of 500 pounds.

Features

Besides the 1-click built-in pump, ComfortCoil technology, and SureGrip bottom, the SoundAsleep Dream Series queen size air mattress has a few other features notable features.

It’s made with a puncture-resistant and waterproof material that is durable and won’t deflate in the middle of the night. It comes with a carry bag that makes it easy to store and take with you.

Lastly, its power cord is attached to the built-in pump with a storage compartment to hide away the cord once the mattress is inflated. This air mattress has what you need without unnecessary bells and whistles that drive up the price.

Warranty

The SoundAsleep Dream Series queen size air mattress comes with a limited one year warranty that covers any manufacturer’s defects or issues. For questions or more details about this warranty, you can contact the manufacturer directly at support@SoundAsleepProducts.com or (347)-815-5995.

Customer Complaints

As with any product, some customers are going to complain.

The most common complaint about all air mattresses, regardless of the brand or model, is that they leak air throughout the night. Most of them don’t, but the reality is, some do.

Leaks could happen due to a defect in the product or problem with a valve caused by extended usage.

As soon as you buy one, I recommend testing immediately. It should never leak air, but if it does on that first night, at least you’ll be able to return it.

Although the complaints with this air mattress are few and far between, here are the most common complaints:

  • It’s slow to inflate (some go as fast as one minute).
  • The power cord is too short.
  • It sinks to one side after long-term use.
  • It leaks throughout the night (this is a very common complaint with all air mattresses).
  • It’s too small (technically, it’s a couple of inches shorter than a standard queen).

Price

I was surprised to see how affordable quality air mattresses can be. Although this one is not the cheapest, for what you get, it’s a great value. It’s typically priced under $150, which is average for queen size air mattresses. Considering this is the best overall option, it’s a steal. Check out the current price and read hundreds of other reviews on Amazon.

Most Comfortable: King Koil Queen Size Luxury Raised Air Mattress

If you’re looking for the most comfortable queen size air mattress, you’ve found it with King Koil. The King Koil Queen Size Luxury Raised Air Mattress was built for comfort and is the only sleep brand endorsed by the International Chiropractors Association. This air mattress is very similar to the SoundAsleep Dream Series but sets itself apart in terms of comfort with its soft suede top layer that keeps sheets in place, built-in pillow, and Enhanced Coil Technology. When it comes to comfort, this is the best queen size air mattress you can buy. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect with this air mattress:

Ease of Use: Inflating and Deflating

This King Coil air mattress is simple and easy to use. It comes with a built-in 120V AC pump that operates with a simple dial that you can turn to inflate or deflate, almost exactly like the SoundAsleep Dream Series. It inflates and deflates in just four quick minutes.

To set it up, you roll it out flat on the floor, plug in the built-in pump, and turn the dial to “inflate.” Simple and easy with no fuss.

Comfort

So what makes the King Koil air mattress more comfortable than the rest?

First, it features Enhanced Coil Design, which means that it has air-filled coils that provide spinal support and help keep the mattress’ shape and firmness. It also has a thick suede top layer that keeps sheets in place but is also very comfortable to sleep directly on without sheets. The head-side edge is slightly raised, providing a comfortable resting zone for your head and neck. This incline provides comfort with or without an actual pillow.

King Koil has been focused on developing comfortable sleep products for decades. In addition to air mattresses, they make regular mattresses too. Since 1969 they’ve partnered with the International Chiropractors Association to create products that offer clinically sound support.

Size

King Koil is a real queen size mattress. When inflated, it measures 80 inches long, 60 inches wide, and 20 inches tall. Similar to the SoundAsleep Dream Series, this air mattress is taller than average, which helps for getting in and out and makes it feel like a traditional mattress. It weighs around 17 pounds deflated and can hold up to 600 pounds.

Features

The King Koil air mattress comes with a high capacity built-in pump, an Ultra Grip bottom to prevent it from sliding, a carry bag for convenient storage and portability, and a built-in power cord with a storage compartment.

It’s made from high-quality materials that are water and puncture resistant. All in all, this is a well-rounded air mattress with everything you could ask for, plus bonus features for superior comfort.

Warranty

All King Koil products are guaranteed against manufacturing defects and materials. They recommend registering your air mattress at the time of purchase to make future warranty claims easier. For more information about King Koil’s warranty, visit their website.

Customer Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive reviews, some customers do complain. Here are the most common themes from the ones that were disappointed:

  • It leaks during the night.
  • The pump breaks or doesn’t work properly.
  • It’s smaller than expected.

Price

The price of the King Koil air mattress, in my opinion, is very reasonable. To get a queen size air mattress that is this comfortable, easy to use, and will last a very long time for under $200 is rare. Pricing varies by the seller, but you can check on the current price and read hundreds of other reviews on Amazon.

Most Portable: Etekcity Camping Queen Size Air Mattress

If you have the travel bug and are always on the go, the most portable queen size air mattress is the Etekcity Camping Queen Size Air Mattress. This air mattress is specially designed for road trips, travel, and outdoor use. It’s made of thick, durable PVC material that can withstand the bare ground but will not scratch or damage flooring. It’s nine inches tall, which provides protection from the ground but is small enough to fit within tents, the back of a pickup, or any other tight space. The portable rechargeable electric pump allows you to use this air mattress without access to an outlet. Although there are better queen size air mattresses for home use, none of them rival Etekcity Camping for travel and nights on the road.

YouTube video

Ease of Use: Inflating and Deflating

One of the features that sets the Etekcity Camping air mattress apart is its rechargeable air pump. Most air mattresses require you to plug the air pump into an outlet, but with this one, you can charge it up before heading out. You can also plug it into your car to charge. Since this air mattress isn’t as thick as the SoundAsleep Dream Series or the King Koil, it completely inflates and deflates in only one minute.

The only downside with this air mattress is that you have to plug the pump into the valve and hold it while it inflates. With many others, the pump is built-in and does the work itself with the flip of a switch. This is a small sacrifice to make when you get an air mattress as portable as this one.

Comfort

The Etekcity Camping air mattress may not be as comfortable as the King Koil, but it wouldn’t have made this list if it wasn’t extremely comfortable.

It features several layers of supportive material, including small coils that help keep shape and firmness. The top layer is a flocked velvet-like material that is soft and comfortable even without a sheet. Like most air mattresses, this one has an anti-skid bottom that keeps it from sliding as you toss and turn.

Size

The Etekcity Camping air mattress is 80 inches long, 60 inches wide, and 9 inches tall. It’s lower height compared to the SoundAsleep (17 inches), and King Koil (20 inches) makes it more difficult to get in and out of but much easier to fit in tents and transport once it’s inflated. It weighs about 14 pounds has a weight limit of 650 pounds.

Features

If portability is your priority, you need an air mattress that’s lightweight, small enough to fit in tight spaces, easy to inflate and deflate on the go, and convenient to store.

With the Etekcity air mattress, you get all that and more. It’s only 14 pounds, only 9 inches tall, inflates and deflates in one minute with a rechargeable pump, and comes with a convenient carry bag that you can pack in minutes. The most unique feature is the rechargeable pump, which standard air mattresses rarely have.

Warranty

The Etekcity Camping queen size air mattress comes with a one year warranty and lifetime support. Like most warranties, theirs covers manufacturer’s defects only. Read the details on Etekcity.com.

Customer Complaints

No matter what, some customers are going to run into issues. Although the vast majority of customers have nothing but great things to say about this air mattress, these are the common themes from the ones that complain:

  • It’s difficult to get in and out of since it’s so low to the ground.
  • It slowly leaks during the night.
  • It leaks near the pump valve.
  • The fabric has a strong unpleasant odor.

Price

I’ve already mentioned that the Etekcity Camping is the most portable queen size air mattress, but I have not yet mentioned that it is one of the most affordable too. This mattress is usually priced under $100, which is an absolute steal. Check out the current prices and read hundreds of reviews on Amazon.

Best for Camping: Coleman Queen Size Airbed Cot

Coleman Queen Size Airbed Cot
Coleman Queen Size Airbed Cot (see on Amazon)

If you’re a fan of the great outdoors and need an air mattress for your nights with nature, the Coleman Airbed Cot is the best queen size air mattress for camping. Its main point of difference is its sturdy steel cot base that elevates the mattress 22 inches off the ground, protecting you from the elements while you enjoy the outdoors. Coleman is a very well-known and respected brand of outdoor and camping products that has been in business for over 100 years. When it comes to camping, Coleman is the brand, and this product is no exception.

Ease of Use: Inflating and Deflating

The Coleman Queen Size Airbed Cot comes with a 4D battery-operated pump (batteries sold separately), which makes it easy to inflate and deflate on the go without access to an outlet.

Using the pump to inflate the mattress is easy. You simply plug the pump into the air value and press go. It only takes a few minutes to inflate and deflate. The downside is that you need to remember to bring D cell batteries with you. It is not compatible with rechargeable batteries, as many customers found out the hard way.

Comfort

Coleman takes pride in offering air mattresses that will stay inflated and will not leak throughout the night.

Although some customers complain that their mattresses leaked, the majority are pleased with the fact that the Coleman Queen Size Airbed Cot stays inflated throughout the night.

Like all of the other air mattresses I’ve covered, Coleman’s also has air coil technology that they call ComfortStrong. These air coils provide support and sturdiness throughout the night.

It also comes with a sewn-in zip cover to provide the feeling of a fitted sheet.

The characteristic that sets this air mattress apart and makes it ideal for camping is its steel base. Most air mattresses sit directly on the floor or ground, but this one props you up. The added elevation not only adds comfort by creating a protective barrier between you and the ground, but it also makes it easy to get in and out and provides space to store supplies underneath.

Size

The Coleman Queen Size Airbed Cot is 78 inches long, 59 inches wide and 22 inches tall (including the cot). Its 42 pounds and supports up to 600 pounds. Its frame is made of steel, which makes it much heavier than most air mattress sets.

Features

Coleman Airbed Cot Cupholder

The Coleman Queen Size Airbed Cot comes with unique features that make it a great overall air mattress but even better for avid campers. Coleman has what they call their AirTight system to ensure each air mattress that is shipped from their factory is leak-free (the most prominent complaint across all air mattress brands and models). Its ComfortStrong coil system provides comfort and long-lasting support. It features two air valves making it fast and easy to deflate. It comes with two mini side tables with cup holders to hold a glass of water or your cell phone at night. Lastly, it comes with a convenient carry bag for easy storage and portability.

Warranty

Coleman’s one-year limited warranty covers material and manufacturer’s defects. Read the fine print on Coleman’s website.

Customer Complaints

The most common custom complaints about the Coleman Queen Size Airbed Cot are:

  • It requires D batteries that are not included.
  • It’s extremely heavy (42 pounds).
  • The pump doesn’t work well, especially when the batteries are running low.
  • It leaks air throughout the night (despite their leak-free claims).

Price

The Coleman Queen Size Airbed Cot costs a little more than most air mattresses, mainly because it comes with a steel cot base. Still, it typically runs under $200, which is a nominal expense for a great night’s sleep on the campgrounds. Check the current price and read thousands of other reviews on Amazon.

  1. I have tried both the Coleman and SoundAsleep Queen sized mattresses. The Coleman mattress lasted about 6 months of every night sleeping. The SoundAsleep mattress lasted about 1 1/2 months of every night sleeping. They both got holes along the seem of the chamber so didn’t fall under warranty. My advice, buy the cheapest mattress.
